Smart Caller is the brianchild of Mark Johnson...

I've had an iPhone since the first day it came out, and I've always wanted a better way of calling overseas. I live in San Francisco, CA, but I'm from the UK and my family lives there. When I first tried to call my Mum in England using my iPhone, it just didn't work. AT&T didn't allow international calling at first. It took several calls to customer service to get them to enable it, and when they did turn it on, of course the rates were pretty high. I also tried a web phone service which worked a few times but then just seemed to be broken, leaving us with silence. I figured that I should use an old technology with my iPhone - a calling card. I knew I could get great rates, but juggling all those numbers you have to dial is so inconvenient. So when the iPhone App Store came out, I knew I could provide something better for me and every iPhone user by writting an app that knows how to dial internationally using a calling card automatically. Smart Caller was born.

When I started researching the calling card market, I realized that difficult dialing was only half of the problem; the other half is finding a good calling card in the first place. Phone companies market calling cards in a confusing way by bombarding the consumer with pricing data while never actually telling you how much your call will really cost. I figured I could do better there too, so I set out to find a few good calling cards for my users that work well with Smart Caller and the iPhone. I'm in the process of building a pricing engine to make it easier to choose among cards, so be sure to check back for it.

I hope you find Smart Caller useful; please do email me your questions and feedback.

Cheers,

Mark
